Project summary

I first met the founders of Botanic Universe when this was just an idea. We met in a coffee shop and discussed the vision for the business. I helped to advise them on the web technologies they need to use (Shopify was the main contender) and got them connected with another web design agency.

Once the web store was setup, I ensured that all configuration was done correctly. From their I moved into helping with SEO and Paid Search to drum up business.

Solving problems outside of digital marketing

As we began to work together and build up the order volume, pain points outside of just digital marketing were also found.

One of these problems was the product labels and the label printing process.

The initial issue with the labels was that the label paper being used was not waterproof or oilproof. As soon as a little bit of oil or water got on it, it would smudge the ink and ruin the look of the bottle. Also, there was information that clients wanted that wasn't present on the labels (i.e. the botanical names of the essential oils).

Another issue uncovered was that when an order would come in, they would type the details of each label into a word document by hand... I knew this process wouldn't scale. Not only was it prone to human error, but it was a poor use of time and for the limited staffing that was present.

I researched solutions for them and we landed on using a dedicated label printer that would print high-quality labels that were oil proof and wouldn't smudge.

Once the printer as sourced, we tested a few label papers to find the perfect label paper for this use case.

I researched some software options to help with this and found one that would allow for variables to be pulled in that would populate certain areas of the lablel. With a workflow like this, we would automate much of the printing.

Orders would come in and the system would automatically know how many labels of each type of label size would be required. This helped to improve their warehouse workflow tremendously and make life easier.
